Preventing Dampwood Termites

by Roger Harris
for About.com

Dampwood termites can generally be prevented with a few simple steps:
Repair all leaky pipes, roofs, downspouts and irrigation systems.
Trim any shrubbery that blocks air flow around and over the home's foundation.
Isolate the foundation from the soil by at least 12 inches of concrete.
Remove any scrap wood, lumber, or tree stumps located or stored underneath the home.
Pile firewood on a metal rack so it will not be in contact with the soil, the home or its foundation.
Move any piles of dirt that contact the foundation.
