Should You be Worried About Bed Bugs in Your Hotel?

Bed bug inspections of hotels start with technicians using physical detection tools like putty knives, screwdrivers and flashlights to take down curtain rods, to remove and look inside utility service covers and air handling units and to slip pictures off the walls.

Linens are quarantined and laundered separately and infested mattresses, box springs and bed encasements are disposed of.

Survey Says
In 2007 of 700 mid-range hotels surveyed by a pest control firm, 60% reported treating at least 1 room for bed bugs in the past 5 year period, although of the 75,000 available rooms, 99% did not have a bed bug infestation in any given year.

Have Legs Will Travel
Bed bugs use wall voids to travel from room to room and 70% of the time, the room adjacent to the infested room, that shared the wall with the bed headboard was also home to bed bugs, with much smaller occurrences of infestations in the rooms above and below.

Treat Me Right
Field reports in 2006 noted that pest control re-treatments were becoming frequent as bed bugs had developed resistance to the commonly used pyrethroids, so firms generally switched to synthetic pyrethroid dusts and liquids to obtain more effective control.

Bottom Line
Contact the hotel management prior to your stay and ask what measures they take to prevent and control bed bug infestations. If you are not satisfied with their answer, book a room at another hotel if possible.
